The Spaceship Ensemble has an antenna for unusual angles. For this concert, the Hague ensemble has joined forces with two composers (nothing unusual so far). Carmen Jaci and Martin Keary both write new work at the intersection of acoustic and electronic music, a border area where the hybrid Spaceship Ensemble excels.
But here it comes: Martin Keary leads a double life as YouTube phenomenon Tantacrul, a new music influencer, some of whose videos have attracted millions of views. Conservatory students all over the world follow his channel. If anyone is able to open up contemporary music for young audiences, it’s him.
Experimental music is a niche? Says who? Carmen Jaci and Keary/Tantacrul make it clear how fruitful the intersection of composed music and adventurous pop can be. With an acoustic line-up of harp, piano, accordion, guitar/mandolin and percussion as well as a truckload of electronic instruments and synths, Spaceship is the ultimate vehicle to explore that terrain.
