Fascinated by the inner voice in each of us, Lera Auerbach composed Arcanum for viola and piano ten years ago. The title means ‘mysterious knowledge’, referring to what could be called intuition, knowledge we possess but cannot put into words. For Auerbach, music is the perfect means to express this. From Dutch composer Rozalie Hirs, who like Auerbach is also a poet, we hear the extraordinary cycle Dreams of airs. In a lounge-like setting, this work offers a hypnotic listening experience – especially in the capable hands of Ensemble Klang, one of the top ensembles of the contemporary music scene.
